1. Agreement

These Terms of Use govern your use of the Hanzi Mosaic mobile application (the "App") provided by ToneSeed. By using the App you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

2. The App

Hanzi Mosaic helps you learn Chinese characters, simplified or traditional, following the HSK 3.0 levels. It is a study aid: we work to keep meanings, pinyin readings, stroke order and example sentences accurate, but we cannot guarantee that all content is free of errors.

3. Hanzi Mosaic Pro

Some content requires a Hanzi Mosaic Pro subscription, offered as monthly or yearly auto-renewing plans, sometimes with a free trial.

  • Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase, or when a free trial ends.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period at the then-current price.
  • You can manage and cancel subscriptions in your App Store account settings. Cancelling stops future renewals; it does not refund the current period.
  • Any unused part of a free trial is forfeited when you buy a subscription.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple under its policies.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to copy, reverse engineer, resell or redistribute the App or its content except as allowed by law, and not to use it in a way that harms the App or other people.

5. Content and Licences

The App's curriculum, memory stories, illustrations and design are owned by ToneSeed. Parts of the character data are derived from open datasets and are used under their licences: HSK 3.0 character and word lists by Mani (krmanik/HSK-3.0, CC BY-SA 4.0), Make Me a Hanzi by Shaunak Kishore (LGPL-3.0, with stroke data under the Arphic Public License), CC-CEDICT by MDBG and CC-CEDICT contributors (CC BY-SA 4.0), example sentences from Tatoeba (CC BY 2.0 FR), and SUBTLEX-CH frequencies by Qing Cai and Marc Brysbaert (CC BY 4.0). Characters are set in Noto Serif SC and Noto Serif TC by Adobe and Google (SIL Open Font License 1.1). The derived character data is available under the same share-alike terms on request.

6. Disclaimer

The App is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, to the extent permitted by law.

7. Limitation of Liability

To the extent permitted by law, ToneSeed is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising from your use of the App. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the App in the twelve months before the claim.

8. Apple

These terms are between you and ToneSeed, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them. Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies.

9. Changes

We may update these terms. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept them.
